Commemorative Sponsorship Scheme

Park bench

Currently we are offering a limited service for those wishing to to sponsor a park bench or a tree in a park or green space in Burnley.

Bench

Park benches vary in style in each park.

Towneley Park – There are opportunities to sponsor a metal bench along Holmes Road. Due to the ongoing works, we are currently not placing out any more benches around the Hall. To see the available locations please click on this link.

Thompson Park – The park benches (pictured) have been lovingly restored by a skilled volunteer to a high standard.  Your sponsorship will include the installation of a stainless steel commemorative plaque which will include the wording of your choice.

Ightenhill Park, Scott Park, Memorial Park, and Queen’s Park benches vary in style and cost. If one of these is the preferred location a cost will be sought before proceeding.

It is important that you read the terms and conditions first which are available on the downloads section of this page.

The cost of a bench sponsorship will in Thompson Park be £350 and subject to terms and conditions.  The cost of benches in other parks will vary depending on location and type.

Tree

A commemorative tree can be sponsored which includes the supply, planting, post, and aftercare.  The plaque with the memorial inscription can be purchased by the sponsor or supplied by Burnley Borough Council at an extra cost. The park and exact location will be subject to availability which is carefully considered by the Council.  The considerations that must be made by the council include:

  • Space for the tree to grow into its proper form
  • Suitability of the site
  • Closeness to other trees
  • Suitability of the species for the park/green space and characteristics of the tree

It is important that you read the terms and conditions first which are available on the downloads section of this page.

The cost of tree sponsorship will be £350 (plus £25 for the plaque if required) and subject to terms and conditions.

Please note that we are not currently accepting applications for commemorative trees in Towneley Park, Padiham Memorial Park, and Cemeteries in Burnley. This is due to having reached capacity in these areas and most trees need space to grow into a healthy and natural condition. We need to preserve open space in keeping with the original landscape design of each individual park. As dangerous and dying trees are removed there may be further capacity for new commemorative trees to be planted.

For general enquiries about the commemorative scheme please contact greenspaces@burnley.gov.uk or call 01282 425011 and press option 3.

Please note that space is limited and we reserve the right to withdraw applications should capacity be reached. The deadline for applications for planting in Autumn is the 30th of September. The deadline for applications for planting in Spring is the 31st of January.
