Paying your Council Tax

Direct debit

You can choose to pay by Direct Debit from the 5 dates shown below

  • 1st day of the month
  • 7th day of the month
  • 16th day of the month
  • 23rd day of the month
  • 30th day of the month

You can also choose to pay over 10 or 12 monthly instalments. (These may be reduced depending upon the number of months remaining in the financial year).

You can pay your Council Tax in weekly or fortnightly instalments, payable on Fridays, when you pay by Direct Debit.

With Direct Debit you have a guarantee of an immediate refund in the unlikely event of an error occurring. We will inform you of any changes 10 working days before the next instalment is due and you are free to cancel at any time, so you stay in control of your payments.

Setting up your Direct Debit couldn’t be easier. Simply log in to your Citizen Access account using your unique online key and Council Tax number, both can be found on your last Council Tax bill.

Pay Online

Payments made after 3.30pm will be credited to your account on the next working day.

By Mobile App

You can pay your bill using your Apple or Android mobile phone. The app is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play. You will need to input a 19 digit Payment Reference Number which is the number beneath the barcode on the front of your bill.

By Telephone

Call 0300 456 0507 and quote the account/invoice number at the front of your bill, following the prompts you will hear. Payments can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Calls are charged at normal operator’s rate.

By Barcode

At any Post Office (Find your nearest Post Office) or PayPoint outlet (Find your nearest outlet) using the barcode on the front of your Council tax bill or reminder letter. Simply take your bill or reminder letter along with your payment and the cashier will scan the barcode. 

By Standing Order

You will need to contact your bank. The Burnley Borough Council bank account to credit is sort code 40-15-17, account number 91206850. Please quote your council tax reference number (11 digit number on your bill).

By Bank Transfer (BACS)

By Post

Please make cheques or postal orders payable to Burnley Borough Council and send them to the address below. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted.
