Burnley Council has launched an eight-week public consultation on plans to reduce the amount some of the most vulnerable residents pay in council tax over the next two years

Working age claimants on full council tax benefit currently receive a subsidy of up to 100% on their bills. The rate was increased this year from the previous 85% level.

The council is proposing to set the level of subsidy for eligible working age claimants up to a maximum of 95% in 2024/25, and 90% in 2025/26, to help alleviate some of the financial hardship caused by the current national cost-of-living crisis. The subsidy would return to the 85% rate in April 2026.

There are currently 9,698 households in the borough claiming council tax support, of which 70% (6,814) are people of working age and 30% are pensioners.

Pensioners are protected under government legislation and continue to receive council tax support at the same level up to a maximum of 100%.
