Part of Burnley town centre is to be given an artistic make-over thanks to an imaginative arts project.

The project, called Raise The Curtain, will take place in lower St James Street which has recently been earmarked a High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ).

It aims to tell the story of the area through street-level shutter artworks, combining art and heritage to engage a new audience.

Plea from Council Leader: Don't mix with other households

Burnley Council leader Mark Townsend has urged local residents not to mix with anyone outside their household or social "bubble" unless absolutely necessary as infection rates in the borough soar dramatically above the national average.

"We have to do something now before it's too late," warned Councillor Townsend.

Burnley is well into the "red zone" in terms of the numbers of positive cases of Covid-19 and the figures are rising. Cases are increasing in every part of the borough.

New leader elected

Councillor Mark Townsend has been elected as the new leader of Burnley Council.

The move follows the resignation of the previous leader, Councillor Charlie Briggs, who led a coalition administration.

Labour now takes control of the council, as the largest group. Its 22 seats falls one short of an overall majority on the 45-seat authority.

Parts of Burnley get crime-fighting cash boost

Burnley is one of only two areas in Lancashire to receive funding to help reduce crime and make communities safer.

The Safer Streets funding will be used in specific crime “hot spots” and will be aimed at making residents feel safer in their homes.

New CCTV networks, motion sensor lights, secure gates and doors and motorbike barriers are just some of the measures that could be implemented in parts of the Bank Hall and Burnley Wood areas.
