Burnley Council’s housing team has made it through to the final of a national award for its work with landlords, managing agents and residents to help improve local neighbourhoods.

The private sector housing team has been shortlisted in the MJ Achievement Awards 2023 in the Best Council Services Team category. It faces competition from seven other local authority teams from across the UK, including from much larger councils such as Oldham, Oxford and Reading.

The winners will be announced on 23rd June.

The team’s submission to the judges said: “The private sector housing team introduced and coordinated a wide range of services to continue and develop a comprehensive programme of neighbourhood regeneration.

“The team showed strong leadership with the introduction of new services and the integration of public and private sector partners, enterprise with the emphasis being on generating income and creating self-financing services with little or no draw on scarce council resources, and creativity in a bottom-up approach to supporting neighbourhoods offering real help where it is needed.”

The council’s chief operating officer, Lukman Patel, said: “It’s fantastic to see the hard work and achievements of this team being recognised by reaching the final of this national local government award.

“The private sector housing team works closely with owner occupiers, private landlords and their tenants to help improve housing standards across our borough. They have been very successful in helping to improve living standards, sometimes in very challenging circumstances.

“We’re looking forward to the final and, hopefully we can bring the award to Burnley.
