Burnley came alive with pride and ceremony on Tuesday 8th July 2025 as the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment paraded through the streets to mark their Freedom of the Borough.
Granted in 2013, the Freedom of the Borough is the highest civic honour and reflects Burnley’s enduring relationship with the Regiment. The parade provided a opportunity for the public to show appreciation for the soldiers’ service at home and abroad.
Led by a military band, mounted police and soldiers in ceremonial dress, the Regiment stepped off from St James’s Street at 12:00pm. The parade route led to Burnley Football Club, where the Regiment were inspected by the Mayor, the Deputy Lieutenant and the leader of the Council, before an audience of civic leaders and veterans.
Mayor of Burnley, Councillor Paul Reynolds, said:
“I would like to thank the Duke of Lancaster regiment for choosing Burnley to host one of their freedom parades. I was delighted to see the parade and I am sure the many onlookers enjoyed seeing them pass. Burnley has a strong connection with the armed forces. Our many servicemen and women, veterans and cadets will have been proud to see the Regiment today “
The day was organised in partnership between Burnley Borough Council and the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, as part of a series of Freedom Parades being held across the North West.
