Council Tax Support provides help for people on low incomes with their Council Tax bill. The amount you can get depends on your income, savings, household and circumstances.
For 2026-27, if you are of working age, the maximum reduction you could be awarded is 85% of your Council Tax. If you are of pension age, you may qualify for 100% dependant on your circumstances.

Council tax support for terminally ill residents
Additional financial support from 1St April 2026 is available for Council Tax payers who are in receipt of Council Tax Support where a member of the household has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. A discount will be applied reducing council tax liability to nil, providing assistance at a difficult time. Click here for full details of the scheme.
Qualifying criteria
In order to qualify for a reduction you must:
- be in receipt of Council Tax Support and;
- either you, your partner or a dependant have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
How to apply
- Email benefits@burnley.gov.uk to request support under the terminal illness rules and;
