The Biodiversity Duty

The Environment Act 2021 introduced a strengthened biodiversity duty which requires the Council (and a number of other public bodies in England) to consider what it can do to conserve and enhance biodiversity.

The First Consideration Report

A First Consideration Report was published in December 2023. This document summarised the council’s then current and planned actions to contribute towards the revised Biodiversity Duty, and suggested some future actions for consideration.

The Biodiversity Report

Following the first consideration and report, the council had to agree any new or revised policies and actions for conserving and enhancing biodiversity and report on them.

The First Biodiversity Report covering the period ending 1 January 2026 was required to be published no later than 26 March 2026, and then at least every five years after that.
