Cycling

Cycling - General Information

Introduction
Burnley Borough Council has worked closely with partners, Lancashire County Council, SUSTRANS (sustainable transport charity), British Waterways and others to develop a network of cycle routes around Burnley & Padiham.

Cycling Strategy
A Cycling Strategy was developed and adopted by the Council.  It identified a network of core cycling routes around the Borough.  A map of those routes has been produced and is updated regularly.

For cycle routes in the area please follow the link.

Responsibilities
Burnley Borough Council

The Council is responsible for the maintenance for off road cycle routes through Parks and public land.  It also raises funds from external sources and works in partnership with other organisations to improve access to the countryside for pedestrians and cyclists.

Defects with on off-road routes and suggestions for improvements should be directed to the Council's Streetscene department.

Lancashire County Council
Lancashire County Council is responsible for the Highway Network, which includes implementation and maintenance of road cycle lanes, advanced stop lines, toucan crossings and cycleway signage.

It also undertakes "Travelwise" greener transport initiative work which involves the development of school and work-place travel plans.
