Burnley invites people to a “Great Get Together”

Release date:
Wednesday, 14 June, 2017

People are being invited to take part in The Great Get Together event being held in Burnley as part of a national initiative to forge closer links between communities.

The event will take place in the Peace Garden, between the Central Library and magistrates’ courts, on Saturday (17th June) between 11am and 2pm.

It is part of a national campaign, inspired by the murder of MP Jo Cox and supported by the Foundation in her name, which aims to confirm that “we have more in common than that which divides us.”

At noon there will be a series of short speeches, prayers and a minute’s silence, followed by live music from the Recovery Band.

The day has been organised by local community groups, faith organisations, Burnley Council, Lancashire County Council and others.

The Central Library has put up a display to coincide with the Great Get Together about the importance of democracy, and the history of former Burnley MPs.

On Wednesday (21st) local inter-faith network Building Bridges for Burnley, is holding a Great Get Together event at the Singing Ringing Tree, Crown Point. People are asked to meet at the Crown Point car park from 8.30pm for a 9pm start. People can opt to fast during the day. Food will be provided at the event and participants will be invited to join those observing Ramadan by breaking the fast together at 9.47pm.
