Council officers are proceeding with a bid for lottery cash to restore and improve Burnley’s historic Mechanics Theatre.

A report to the council’s executive notes a stage 1 application has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

If successful, officers, working with Burnley Leisure trust, would prepare and submit a stage 2 bid for £2.8 million.

Padiham Leisure Centre is set to refurbish its gym by investing in state-of-the-art equipment.

Burnley Leisure, which runs the centre, plans to renew the ageing current equipment with up-to-date pieces and convert an under-utilised meeting room into a group cycling area for spinning classes.

Bosses hope the move will help retain membership numbers and attract new customers

The work is expected to take placein the autumn.

The running of Towneley golf course has been transferred to Burnley Leisure, after Burnley Council’s executive approved the move.

This move opens the way for a range of improvements aimed at attracting more players to the 9-hole, 18-hole and pitch and putt courses, which were previously operated on behalf of the council.

Towneley Hall in Burnley is championing the work of its volunteers and encouraging others to join them by staging a Volunteer Weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, 1st and 2nd April, staff at the hall will be holding informative drop-in sessions recognising the contribution of their current volunteers and providing an opportunity for residents to see what volunteering is like at the museum.

Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering at Towneley is invited to attend the event on one of the days between 1pm and 4pm.

The results of a review of Burnley Leisure will be reported to councilors next week.

The scrutiny review found the leisure trust offers impressive, modern and innovative facilities that are popular and well used. It also highlighted the need to continue to market and promote Burnley Leisure services to attract more members, particularly in light of the increased challenge from private gyms.

The scrutiny report will be considered by Burnley Council’s executive on 27th March.

UCFB is delighted to announce a renewed partnership with Burnley Council that will see three students from the town awarded a £3,000 scholarship to study a university degree in the football, business and related industries at UCFB Etihad Campus in Manchester.

Burnley Council has received confirmation that it has secured a grant of £861,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards the £1.19 million costs of restoring Thompson Park, it was announced today (Monday 9th Jan).

The project aims to restore the Grade II listed park and to celebrate its heritage, from its opening in 1930 to the present day.

“Water" way to spread the festive cheer. Local anglers have splashed out and donated money to improve a Burnley park.

Burnley and Pendle District Angling Association donated £556 to Burnley Council. The money will be used to pay for a new noticeboard which will be installed at Rowley Lake car park by the council’s greenspaces team. 

It will allow fisherman and the wider community to share information, which is currently being zip-tied to fences and pinned to trees causing damage to them.

So said BBC reporter John Maguire as millions of TV viewers saw Towneley Park, Burnley, in all its morning glory.

The park and its historic hall formed the picturesque backdrop for a live broadcast into this morning’s (Friday) BBC Breakfast Show. The BBC was looking at the way managing Britain’s parks has changed in the light of national funding cuts.

Burnley Council has been recognised national for its innovative approach to managing not only parks, but grass and woodland and other open areas.
