The Mayor of Burnley 2017/18

Councillor Howard Baker, the Mayor of Burnley 2017/18

Councillor Howard Baker has been installed as the Mayor of Burnley for the coming year.

His partner Tracey Rhodes will act as Mayoress.

Coun. Baker, who runs a local estate agency, said he would use the Mayor’s charity fund to help local people and groups to have access to funding that might not otherwise be available.

“I promise … that I will do my utmost to make my Mayoral year a success and work as hard as I am able to help promote the town and benefit its citizens,” he said.

The new Mayor was born in the Duke Bar area of Burnley in 1947 and attended several schools in the town. His mother was a weaver and his father as manager at swimming baths in North Street, Central and Gannow.

Coun. Baker went on to attend Burnley Grammar School and then to Merton College, Oxford, to read physics.

On leaving university he went to work at BTR, a rubber company in Leyland manufacturing conveyor belting and hose. He went on to manage several companies within the group. His work took him all over the country before returning to his home town 25 years ago. He has served as a councillor for Trinity for the past 12 years.

The Mayor has two sons and four grandsons.

Councillor Charlie Briggs was installed as deputy Mayor for 2017/18
